3、eneencodingtheE1matrixprotein.Theaminoacidsequenceoftheprimarytranslationproductpredictsapolypeptideof262residueswhichsharesmanyfeatureswiththepreviouslycharacterizedmurinehepatitisvirusandinfectiousbronchitisvirusE1proteins.However,N-terminalaminoacidsequencingrevealedthataputatives
4、ignalpeptideof17residueswasabsentinthevirion-associatedpolypeptide.Thepredictedtool.wt.ofthematureunglycosylatedproduct,27800,isinagreementwiththeexperimentalMrvalue.INTRODUCTIONTransmissiblegastroenteritis(TGE)isahighlycontagiousdiseaseofpigscausinghighmortalityinneonates.Thecausala
5、gent(TGEvirus,TGEV)belongstothefamilyCoronaviridae,agroupofenvelopedviruseswithalarge,positive-strandedRNAgenome(forreview,seeSiddelletal.,1983).Coronavirus-encodedinformationisexpressedinthecellthroughanestedsetofsubgenomicmRNAswithcommon3'-terminalsequences.ThecodingpartofeachmRNAc
6、orrespondsapproximatelytotheY-terminalsequencesthatareabsentinthenextsmallerspecies.Mousehepatitisvirus(MH'q)andinfectiousbronchitisvirus(IBV)mRNAscontainatthe5'endashortnon-codingsequencejoinedtothebodysequencesbydiscontinuoustranscription;aconsensussequenceidentifiedateachintergeni
7、cregionmayactasabindingsitefortheRNApolymerase-leadercomplex(Spaanetal.,1983;Brownetal.,1984;Laietal.,1984;Budzilowiczetal.,1985).TGEVcontainsthreemajorstructuralpolypeptides:thepeplomerglycoproteinE2(200Kto220K),whichformsthedistinctivesurfaceprojections,thetransmembraneormatrixprot
