2、eswhichhaveanunusualmorphologyandwhichcauserespiratorydiseaseinman.Thestructureofthesevirusesisidenticalwiththatofthevirusesofavianinfectiousbronchitis(BrRI~Yetal.,1964)andmousehepatitis(TY~REIJLandALMEIDA,1967).Thevirionsarepleomorphicbodies,80--160m~zindiameter,andarecovered
3、withclub-shapedprojections15m~deepwhichproduceacharacteristicfringearoundtheparticles.Allthevirusesareether-andacid-labileand,astheirreplicationisnotin-hibitedbyBUDR,probablyhaveanRNAgenome.Ithasbeensuggested(Nature220,1968)thatthesevirusesbelongtoasinglebiologicalgroup.Allbut
4、oneofthestrainsofthehumanrespiratoryvirusesofthisgroupwerefirstisolatedinorganculturesofhumanembryonasalandtrachealepithelium(TYR~EnLandBYron,1965;TYI~R~LLandBYNOr,1968;McI~Tosgetal.,1967).Theexception,the229-Evirus,wasisolatedinsecondaryhumankidneytissueculturesinwhichitprodu
5、cedacy-topathiceffect(HAM~EandPaOCK~OW,1966).Thepresenceofotherviruseswasrecognisedbydirectelectron-microscopyofthetissueormedium,bytheinhibitionofciliaryactivityinorgancultures,orbytheproductionofcoldsinvolunteers.TwoisolatesmadebyMCI~TOSlthavebeenadaptedtosucklingmiceinwhich
6、intracerebrMinoculationproducesafataldisease;infectedbraincontainsspecificcomplement-fixingantigens(MclNTosH,BEC~:E~andCHA~OCK,1967).Neutralizationtestsperformedwiththeseisolatesandwiththe229-Evirusshowthattheyareantigenicallydistinct.Theobjectsoftheworkreportedhereweretostudy
