4、Thediscoveryofether-labileviruses,serologicallyunrelatedtomyxoviruses,incasesofupperrespiratoryinfectioninman(TYndaLLandBYNOE,1965;ttA~EandPlZOCK~OW,1966)wasthefirststageintherecognitionofanewgroupofviruses,foundininfectionsofbothmanandanimals.Theseviruseswerenamed"coronaviruses"(Na
5、ture,1968)becauseoftheircharacteristicstructure.Coronavirusvirionsarepleomorphic,varyingindiameterfrom800to1500A(AL~EIDAandTYRRELL,1967).Theyarenormallycoveredwitha150A-thickfringeofclub-shapedprojections;theseareeasilyremovedbyeitherphysicalorchemicaltreatments.Severalviruseswithth
6、ismorphologyhavebeenisolatedfromman(e.q.TYR-I~EZL,BY~OEandHoodoo,1968;McI~Tos~etal.,1967;K~IKIA~etal.,1969).Othervirusesofthisgroupincludeinfectiousbronchitisvirusofchickens(BERauetal.,1964),murinehepatitisvirus(ALMETDAandTYm~]~LL,1967),andtransmis-siblegastroenteritisvirusofpigs(TA
