3、,C(D3128),D(D212),Massachusetts(Mass),UKI1andUK12serotypes.Thebasesexaminedcodefortheexternal,hydrophilicregionandthefirstmembrane-embeddedhydrophobicregionofM,bothregionscomprisingapproximately20aminoacids.AspredictedfromproteinMrstudiestheA/DandB/Cserotypes
4、hadtwoandonepotentialglycosylationsitesrespectively.Thisvariationappearedtoderivefromacombinationofbasesubstitutionsanddeletions/insertions.TheglycosylationsequenceAsn-Cys-Thrwashighlyconserved.Overall,theexposedpartofMexhibitedafourfoldgreaterextentofaminoac
5、idvariationthandidthemembrane-embeddedsequence.Thetranscription-associatedhomologyregionsequence(CUUAACAA)inthe5'intergenicregionwasidenticalinallstrainsbuttherewasconsiderablevariationastoitslocation.TheMgeneofUK12appearedtohaveevolvedfromagroupA-likeMgeneby
6、atwostageprocessinvolvingabasesubstitutionintheintergenicregionwhichgeneratedanewAUGtranslationstartcodonfollowedbydeletionoftheoriginalAUG.IsolateUKllcloselyresembledMassstrainsintheintergenicregionbutwasdissimilarfromallstrainsintheproteincodingregion.TheMs
