3、asubstantialandlastingcontributiontoliteratureforchildren."Theyear1970alsomarkedthepublicationofMr.White’sthirdbookforchildren,TheTrumpetoftheSwan,honoredbyTheInternationalBoardonBooksforYoungPeopleasanoutstandingexampleofliteraturewithinternationalim
4、portance.In1973,itreceivedtheSequoyahAward(Oklahoma)andtheWilliamAllenWhiteAward(Kansas),votedbytheschoolchildrenofthosestatesastheir"favoritebook"oftheyear. BorninMountVernon,NewYork,Mr.Whiteattendedpublicschoolsthere.HewasgraduatedfromCornellUnivers
5、ityin1921,workedinNewYorkforayear,thentraveledabout.Afterfiveorsixyearsoftryingmanysortsofjobs,hejoinedthestaffofTheNewYorkermagazine,theninitsinfancy.Theconnectionprovedahappyoneandresultedinasteadyoutputofsatiricalsketches,poems,essays,andeditorials
6、.HisessayshavealsoappearedinHarper’sMagazine,andhisbooksincludeOneMan’sMeat,TheSecondTreefromtheCorner,LettersofE.B.White,TheEssaysofE.B.WhiteandPoemsandSketchesofE.B.White.In1938Mr.Whitemovedtothecountry.OnhisfarminMainehekeptanimals,andsomeofthesecr
7、eaturesgotintohisstoriesandbooks.Mr.Whitesaidhefoundwritingdifficultandbadforone’sdisposition,buthekeptatit.HebeganStuartLittleinthehopeofamusingasix-year-oldnieceofhis,butbeforehefinishedit,shehadgrownup. ForhistotalcontributiontoAmericanletters,Mr.W
8、hitewasawardedthe1971NationalMedalforLiterature.In1963,PresidentJohnF.KennedynamedMr.Whiteasoneofthirty-oneAmericanstoreceivethePresidentialMedalforFreedom.Mr.WhitealsoreceivedtheNationalInstituteofArtsandLetters’GoldMedalforEssaysandCriticism
