3、lity.ItistakenasthesymbolofQingdaoandthewitnessofthehistory.In1891,thegovernmentofQingDynastyappointedZhangGaoyuan,CommanderofDengzhou,tostationtroopsinQingdao,asmallfishingvillageatthattime.Governmentoffices,forts,militarycampswerebuiltinthisvillageoralongthecoast,makingQingdaoaplaceofstrategi
4、cimportanceintermsofcoastdefence.Inordertofacilitythetransportationofmilitarysuppliers,GongZhaoyu,anofficeroftheNorthernNavy,orderedbuildingmaterialstobetransportedfromLvshunandasimplewoodenpierwasthenbuiltonthecoast.Itwasonly200meterslongandratherplaininappearance,knownas"theZhanqiaoPieroftheN
5、avy"or"theZhanqiaoPierontheCoast".In1897,QingdaowasinvadedandoccupiedbyGerman.InordertotransportmilitarysuppliesfromEurope,theGermansrebuilttheoriginalpierwithstonefoundationatthenorthernendandlaidlightrailwayonthepier.Itwasextendedto350meterslongandremainedapierforthepurposeofmilitaryuse.In192
6、2,QingdaoreturnedtoChina.In1931,QingdaoPortwasbuiltandtheZhanqiaoPierendeditshistoricalmissionofloadingandunloadingfreight.Thenitwasopenedtobeafamoustouristattraction.Lateritwasrebuiltofsteelconcrete.Asemicircularseawallwasbuiltattheendofthebridge,onwhichatwo-storeyoctagonalpavilionoftraditiona
