4、ntermsofcoastdefence.Inordertofacilitythetransportationofmilitarysuppliers,GongZhaoyu,anofficeroftheNorthernNavy,orderedbuildingmaterialstobetransportedfromLvshunandasimplewoodenpierwasthenbuiltonthecoast.Itwasonly200meterslongandratherplaininappearance,knownas"theZhanqiaoPieroftheNavy"or"theZhanqi
5、aoPierontheCoast".In1897,Qingdao16wasinvadedandoccupiedbyGerman.InordertotransportmilitarysuppliesfromEurope,theGermansrebuilttheoriginalpierwithstonefoundationatthenorthernendandlaidlightrailwayonthepier.Itwasextendedto350meterslongandremainedapierforthepurposeofmilitaryuse.In1922,Qingdaoreturnedt
6、oChina.In1931,QingdaoPortwasbuiltandtheZhanqiaoPierendeditshistoricalmissionofloadingandunloadingfreight.Thenitwasopenedtobeafamoustouristattraction.Lateritwasrebuiltofsteelconcrete.Asemicircularseawallwasbuiltattheendofthebridge,onwhichatwo-storeyoctagonalpavilionoftraditionalChinesearchitecturals
