4、rbs,maxims,locutionsandtwo-partallegoricalsayings,etc.DefinitionsofEnglishIdioms"LongmanDictionaryofEnglishLanguageandCulture'5hastwodefinitionsofidiom:(1)aphrasewhichmeanssomethingdifferentfromthemeaningoftheseparatewordsfromwhichitisformed;(2)thewayofexpressiontypicalofapersonoragroupinthe
5、iruseoflanguage(SummersR,1998:657)."TheNewOxfordEnglishDictionary'5definesthatidiomis:(l)agroupofwordsestablishedbyusageashavingameaningnotdeduciblefromthoseoftheindividualwords;(2)aformofexpressionnaturaltoalanguage,person,oragroupofpeople(PearsallJ,2001:908).TheRhetoricofIdiomsIdiomisthedi
6、stillateofthenationlanguageabstractedbypeopleduringalongpractice.Therearethreemainfeaturesofidiomrhetoric:abundantcomparisons,vividwordsandlivelycontrasts.First,simileisadirectcomparison,inwhichsubject,referenceandindicatorofresemblanceareallpresent.SuchastheChineseidiom“轻如鸿毛"andtheEnglishid
