2、escribedasbasedonmixedmethods.Ibeginbydiscussingabodyofworkthathasemergedtopromotemixedmethodsresearchacrossthesocialsciences.Ithenreviewandcritiqueempiricalstudiesineachoftwogeneralapproachestomixedmethods:mixeddata-collectionstudies,whichcombinetwoormorekindsofdat
3、a;andmixeddata-analysisstudies,whichcombinetwoormoreanalyticalstrategies,examinequalitativedatawithquantitativemethods,orexplorequantitativedatawithqualitativetechniques.Iarguethat,althoughmixedmethodsresearchisbynomeansnew,empiricalstudiestodaycombinemethodsinmored
4、iverseand,attimes,innovativeways.Nevertheless,importantmethodologicaltensionswilllikelysurfaceastheresearchbecomesmoreself-reflexive・INTRODUCTIONThetwenty-firstcenturyhasseenaremarkablenumberofpublicationsthatidentifythemselvesasbasedonmixedmethods・Itisasurprisingtu
5、rnofevents.Asrecentlyasthe1980s,manyresearcherswerestilldebatingwhetherquantitativeorqualitativemethodsweresuperior,reflectinganun-catholicapproachtosocialsciencemethodsthatthreatenedtosplintersociology(seeCollins1984).Whilesuchattitudeshavenotdisappeared,alternativ
6、eshavecertainlyflourished・Today,methodologistsofonestriperoutinelypromotethevalueofmethodsdifferentfromtheirown,aswhendemographersopenlycallformore"qualitativeresearch"toanswerthequestionsthattheirownmethodscannotaddress(Goergin2003,p・89).Infact,socialscientistsappe
7、arincreasinglywillingtoembracemixedmethodsinanumberofdifferentforms,asdemographerscollaboratewithinterviewers(England&Edin2007),analystsofnarrativeadoptformalmodelingmethods(Franzosi1994)，andmethodologistscreatetechniquestotranscendopposingepistemologicaltraditions(
