3、xfoliatedstructureswhenthenumberoffunctionalgroupsoftheswellingagentincreasedtothreeasevidencedfromX-raydiffractionandtransmissionelectronmicroscopystudies.Theimprovedmorphologyofthenanocompositesresultedintheirenhancedmechanicalandthermalproperties.Inpa
4、rticular,a70%increaseinYoung'modulus,a50%increaseinthemaximumstress,anda30%reductioninthecoefficientsofthermalexpansionforthecaseofBTDA-ODAnanocompositescontaining5wt%trifunctionalgroupswelling-agent-modifiedmontmorilloniteascomparedtothatofpureBTDA-ODA・
5、IntroductionMontmorillonite/polymernanocompositesl-16havegainedconsiderableinterestinrecentyearsowingtotheirenhancedstiffness,strengthandbarrierpropertiesbycontainingonlyafewweightpercentagesoforganicsmodifiedmontmorillonitedispersedinthenanometerscalein
6、thepolymermatrix.Naturemontmorilloniteconsistedoflayeredsilicatescarryingnegativechargesthatformedionicbondswithmetalcationsintheintergalleryofthelayeredsilicates-Thesesilicatesalsocontaineddanglinghydroxylendgroupsontheirsurfaces.17-20Theexistenceofioni
