3、heforemostScottisharchitectofhistime.William,whoasmastermasontotheBoardofOrdnanceinNorthBritainsupervisedthedesignofmilitarybuildings,alsodesignednumerouscountryhousesinaconservativePalladianstyle—themodifiedclassicRomanstylethatwasoriginallydevelopedbythe16th
4、-centuryarchitectAndreaPalladio.TheAdamchildrengrewupintheculturedatmosphereofapropertiedandwell-connected18th-centuryfamily.ShortlyafterRobert’sbirththefamilymovedtoEdinburgh,whereattheageofsixheenteredtheEdinburghHighSchool.In1743heenrolledatTown’sCollege(no
5、wUniversityofEdinburgh),butin1745heabandonedhisstudiesandthefollowingyearenteredhisfather’sofficeasanapprenticeandassistant.WilliamAdamdiedin1748,andhisBoardofOrdnancepostpassedtohiseldestson,John,whotookRobertintopartnership.Inthesucceedingfewyearsbothbenefit
6、edfromthelucrativecontractsthatresultedfromtheappointment.BesidesbuildingFortGeorgeintheMorayFirthnearInverness,theAdambrothersalsowereengagedtocompletetheinterioroftheearlofHopetoun’shouse.IntheirinteriorsthebrothersintroducedintoScotlandanew,lighter,almostRo
7、cocostyleofdecoration.TheotherimportantprivatecommissionoftheseyearswasDumfriesHouse,Ayrshire,fortheearlofDumfries.EuropeaninfluencesIn1754RobertAdam,whobythenconsideredhimselftobeworth£5,000,wasinvitedtoaccompanytheHonourableCharlesHope,theearlofHopetoun’syou
