2、etofamiliarizestudentswiththeimportantdatastructuresthatempiricaleconomistsuse,focusingprimarilyoncross-sectionalandtimeseriesdatasets,asthesearewhatIcoverinafirst-semestercourse.Itisprobablyagoodideatomentionthegrowingimportanceofdatasetsthathavebothacross-sectional
3、andtimedimension.Ispendalmostanentirelecturetalkingabouttheproblemsinherentindrawingcausalinferencesinthesocialsciences.Idothismostlythroughtheagriculturalyield,returntoeducation,andcrimeexamples.Theseexamplesalsocontrastexperimentalandnonexperimentaldata.Studentsstu
4、dyingbusinessandfinancetendtofindthetermstructureofinterestratesexamplemorerelevant,althoughtheissuethereistestingtheimplicationofasimpletheory,asopposedtoinferringcausality.Ihavefoundthatspendingtimetalkingabouttheseexamples,inplaceofaformalreviewofprobabilityandsta
