3、200gigawatts(GW).ThreeGorgeswouldthensurpassthe14,000MWItaipudamlocatedontheParanaRiverattheBrazil/Paraguayborder.ThelatestgovernmentfigureshaveputapricetagofUS$25billionontheproject,althoughotherestimatesputtheactualcostmuchhigher.Thereservoiris630kmlongandanaverageof1.3kmwide,whilethedamwallis1
4、85mhighandalmostasdeep,stretching2.3kmacrossthevalley.About27millioncubicmetersofconcretehavegoneintothestructuresinceworkbegan;thafsmorethaneighttimesasmuchashasbeenpouredintotheHooverdamontheColoradoRiverandtwicetheamountofconcreteintheItaipudam.TheThreeGorgesprojectAugust10,2010hasbeenengineer
5、edtostoreover5trilliongallonsofwaterandtowithstandanearthquakeof7.0ontheRichterscale.Thereabout50,000otherdamsontheYangtzeRiver,mostlyalongtributariesofthemainriver,thatwerebuiltinthepast50yearstocreatefreshwaterreservoirs.Thefreshwaterstoragecapacityhasskyrocketedfrom0.06cubickilometersin1950to1
6、80cubickilometersin2002.WhenthereservoirbehindtheThreeGorgesDamisfull，itwilladdupto40cubickilometerstothattotal.BenefitsfromtheThreeGorgesProjectToChin汩sleaders,theThreeGorgesdamwillprovideafoundationforthenation^sfutureeconomicprosperity.ThepowerwillalsohelpmeetChiliansrapidlygrowingenergydemand
