1、ABSTRACTThepresentstudyfocusesontheutterancesformitigatingface-threateningacts(FTAs)chosenbyhostsandguestsinsomesuccessfultalkshows.Recently,theissueofpolitenesshasbeenbroughtintofocusformanylanguageresearchersforitswideuseinpeople'sdailylifeandwork.Itistruetha

2、tplentyofpolitenesstheorieshavebeenputforwardbysomeexcellentlinguists,buttheFaceTheoryadvancedbyBrownandLevinson(1978)standsoutasthemostinfluential.Theyholdthat“face，'isthepublicself-imagethateveryonewantsandexpectseveryoneelsetorecognize.Ifanyoneinvadesanother

3、person'sself-imageorautonomy,facethreateningactemerges.Inthetypicalconversationalprogram,speakersintalkshowsneedmorestrategiesofpolitenessforlesseningthedegreeofoffencetohearers,thustocreateaharmoniousatmosphereinconversation.Therefore,intalkshows,mitigatedFTAs

4、havebeenprovedtobeveryeffectivepragmaticstrategiestowinhosts'/guests，favor.However,fewlinguisticresearcheshavebeendoneinthisfieldandtheprevioustheoriesofpolitenessdon5tseemtohavegivenabetterexplanationofFTAs.Verschueren^sAdaptationTheory(AT)，fromanewperspective
