2、llstudywhytheycannotidentifythemselvesasChinese.Besides,thisstudywantstoinvestigatetheiropinionsandthechangesintheChinesenationalandculturalidentities.Whatdoestheword“Chinese"meantoTaiwanese?Whatisthemainreasonofthechangesinnationalidentity?And,sincethecross-straitcommuni
3、cationstendtogetmorefrequent,whyinTaiwanthenationalandculturalidentitytendtogetmoreseparated?Thisstudywilltrytoanswerthesequestionsfromvariouspointsofview,aimingtofindouttheprincipalcauseforthesequestionsandawayoutfortheunificationofnationalidentitiesbetweenthetwostraits.
4、TheresultsshowthatthoughmostintervieweesacknowledgeChineseculture,theword"Chinese^impliespoliticalmeaninginTaiwan.ForTaiwanese,theword“Chinese"doesn'tmeangeneticconnectionornationalsignificance,butmoreoften,itmeanspoliticalpowerandnation.Thisstudyalsofindsthatthethriving"
5、Taiwaneseidentity^iskindofpoliticalidentitybasedoncitizenshipratherthanethnicbackground・Alsoit5sanationalidentitythatiscompatiblewithliberalismanddemocracyinnature.Incontrast,"Chineseidentity"wasconstructedbyNationalistGovernmentfortheirspecialpoliticalandeconomicbenefits
6、・WhenTaiwanquitUnitedNationsandthesymbolicmeaningof“China，，changed,the"Chinese^degreeofidentityglided.Theprincipalcauseofthechangeistheinfluenceofvariousnationalismunderspecialbackgroundsofhistory.Inotherwords,withtherisingofTaiwanconsciousness,Taiwaneseidentitycameintobe
7、ing.Finally,becausetheTaiwanpolicyismostlyassimilatedbybigfinancialgroups,thekindnessofthemainlandhasbeendistorted.Asaresult,thoughthecross-straitcommunicationstendtogetmorefrequent,thedegreeofidentitytendstogetmoreseparated.ThisremindsusthattheTaiwanpolicyshouldbecarried
