3、icantpopulationofalligators.AlligatormeatisnowreadilyavailableinLouisiana.Louisianaisalsoknownasa“SportsmanParadise”becauseofthelargerecreationalfishingaswellassignificantcommercialfishing.Forexample,theshrimpindustryisworthoverthreehundredandfiftymilliondollarsperyearandthec
4、rayfishindustryinexcessofonehundredmilliondollarsperyearinLouisiana.ThediscoveryofoilandgasinthecoastalzoneintheUnitedStateshasledtolarge-scaledrillingbothonshoreandintheGulfofMexicoregion.Duringthe1940s,refiningoffossilfuelsandproductionofchemicalsbecameanationalemergencyand
5、anumberoflocationsinLouisiana(aswellasothergeographicalregionsinthisgeneralarea)werechosentodevelopthisindustry.Thisareawaschosenbecauseofitsabundanceoffresh-water,deep-waterportsandremotenessfromimminentattack.Theneedtoproducetheseproductsandtheabsenceofenvironmentalregulati
6、onsledtowidespreadmetal(andorganic)pollution.Sincetheearly1970sstrongerregu-lationsandquickerresponsehavebeeninplaceforaccidentalspillsofchemicals,refinedchemicals,andoil.Thesespillscanpollutethewaters,soils,andsediments,whicharethemainfeedinggroundsofthewildlifeandseafoodand
7、canenterthefoodcycle.ThisreviewpresentstheresultsofanumberofselectedstudiesofmetalsinvariousfishandseafoodmainlyinsouthwestLouisiana.WhiletheprimaryfocusisinsouthwestLouisiana,theresultscouldeasilyberepresentativeofanumberofsimilarareasthroughouttheworld.Resultsofsomestudiesi
