2、archinlogisticshasexaminedtheinfluenceonorganizationalperformanceofhigh-performancelogisticspracticesandcapabilities.Forinstance,previousresearchhasshownthatexcellenceinperforminglogisticsactivitiesandcapabilitiesisassociatedwithsuperiororganizationalperformance(Lamberta
3、ndBurduroglo2000;Lynch,Keller,andOzment2000).Despitethisevidence,doubtremainsconcerningthestrengthofthedirectlinkbetweenlogisticsperformanceandorganizationalperformance.Furtherinvestigationisneeded,therefore,tounderstandlogisticsperformanceandtoreinforcethepotentialvalue
4、oflogisticswithintheorganization.Inattemptingtodriveperformanceimprovements,managersoftenstrugglewithmultiple,seeminglyconflicting,objectives(Steers1975).Logisticsmanagershavetraditionallyassumedtheyfaceatoughchoice:eitherstriveforefficiency;orstriveforeffectiveness.Thou
5、ghrecentlogisticsresearchhassuggestedthatthesetwoperformanceobjectivesaremutuallyexclusive(Griffisetal.2004),itispossiblethatthisdilemmaisunwarranted.Forexample,itwouldbedifficulttorankDell’sperformanceinthelate1990’saseitherhighlyefficientoreffective,butmoreappropriatel
6、yhighlyefficientandeffective.Further,logisticsmanagersmuststriveformorethanefficiencyandeffectivenesstoensurethattheyareprovidingthebestcomparative(i.e.,differentiated)netvaluetocustomersinordertocompeteintoday’shypercompetitivemarketplace.Moredemandingcustomers,shortrod
7、uctlifecycles,rapidtechnologicalchanges,globalization,andtheneedtodeliveronWallStreet’sever-risingexpectations(SinghalandHendricks2002),mayinfactdemandbreak-throughthinkingtosimultaneouslydevelophighlyefficient,effective,anddifferentiatedlogisticsactivities.Akeygoalofthi
