3、nactorandplaywright.Shakespearemayhavetaughtatschoolduringthisperiod,butitseemsmoreprobablethatshortlyafter1585hewenttoLondontobeginhisapprenticeshipasanactor.Duetotheplague,theLondontheaterswereoftenclosedbetweenJune1592andApril1594.Duringthatperiod,Shakespeareprobablyhadsomeinefromhisp
4、atron,HenryWriothesley,earlofSouthampton,towhomhededicatedhisfirsttwopoems,VenusandAdonis(1593)andTheRapeofLucrece(1594).ThefomerwasalongnarrativepoemdepictingtherejectionofVenusbyAdonis,hisdeath,andtheconsequentdisappearanceofbeautyfromtheworld.Despiteconservativeobjectionstothepoem'sgl
5、orificationofsensuality,itwasimmenselypopularandwasreprintedsixtimesduringthenineyearsfollowingitspublication.In1594,ShakespearejoinedtheLordChamberlain'spanyofactors,themostpopularofthepaniesactingatCourt.In1599ShakespearejoinedagroupofChamberlain'sMenthatwouldformasyndicatetobuildandop
6、erateanewplayhouse:theGlobe,whichbecamethemostfamoustheaterofitstime.WithhisshareoftheinefromtheGlobe,ShakespearewasabletopurchaseNewPlace,hishomeinStratford.WhileShakespearewasregardedastheforemostdramatistofhistime,evidenceindicatesthatbothheandhisworldlookedtopoetry,notplaywriting,for
