1、ExplainingRevolutionsintheContemporaryThirdWorldJEFFGOODWINandTHEDASKOCPOLFRONTIERSofresearchmovewithhistory,althoughoftenwithalag.Twodecadesago,mostcomparativeresearchonrevolutionsremainedfocusedontheclassicalgreatrevolutionsoftheWest:thoseofEngland,France,a
2、ndRussia.Occasionally,aboldscholarincludednon-Europeanrevolutions(particularlytheChineseandMexican)inbroadercomparativestudies.Itwasnotuntilthemid-1970s,however,thatcomparativescholarsbegantofocusonthefeaturesdistinctivetoThirdWorldsocialrevolutions-thesocial
3、andpoliticalupheavalsinsmaller,dependentstatesoutsideofEurope.Atfirst,perhaps,scholarssup-posedthatsuchsocialrevolutionswouldhappenonlyoccasionallyduringde-colonizationsuchasthosethatplayedthemselvesoutafterWorldWarII.Yetmodemworldhistoryhascontinuedtobepunct
4、uatedbysocialrevolutions,notonlyinpost-colonialSoutheastAsia,Algeria,andPortugueseAfrica,butalsoinformallyindependentstatessuchasCuba,Ethiopia,Iran,andNicaragua.Asnewsocialrevolutionshavecontinuedtooccur,scholarshavebeenchallengedtobroadentheirscopeofcomparat
5、ivestudiesbeyondtheclassicalrevolutionsofEurope,andtheyhaveentertainedmodelsofcausationapplicableacrossmanysmallernon-Westernnationsinthetwentieth-centuryworldcontext.Inthisarticle,wepointtowhatweconsiderthemostpromisingavenuesforcomparativeanalysesofcontempo
6、raryThirdWorldrevolutions.Inparticular,weshalloffersomeworkinghypothesesaboutthedistinctivelypoliticalconditionsthathaveencouragedrevolutionarymovementsandtransfersofpowerinsome,butnotall,ThirdWorldcountries.490SOMEPROBLEMSWITHEXISTINGEXPLANATIONSTwomythshave
7、longcoloredpopularviewsaboutrevolutionsintheThirdWorld:thatdestitution,professionalrevolutionaries,orperhapsbotharesufficienttoprecipitaterevolutions;andthatlocaleventsinThirdWorldcountriesareeasilymanipulatedbyimperialistGreatPowers.Thus,inattemptingtoexplai
8、nThirdWorldinsurgencies,manypeoplepointtotheincrediblepovertyfoundinlargepartsofLatinAmerica,Africa,andAsia-thesortofsheermiserythatcapitalistindustrializationandredistributivewelfarestat
