4、researchonrevolutionsremainedfocusedontheclassicalgreatrevolutionsoftheWest:thoseofEngland,France,andRussia.Occasionally,aboldscholarincludednon-Europeanrevolutions(particularlytheChineseandMexican)inbroadercomparativestudies.Itwasnotuntilthemid-1970s,however,thatcomparativescholarsbegantofoc
5、usonthefeaturesdistinctivetoThirdWorldsocialrevolutions-thesocialandpoliticalupheavalsinsmaller,dependentstatesoutsideofEurope.Atfirst,perhaps,scholarssup-posedthatsuchsocialrevolutionswouldhappenonlyoccasionallyduringde-colonizationsuchasthosethatplayedthemselvesoutafterWorldWarII.Yetmodemwo
6、rldhistoryhascontinuedtobepunctuatedbysocialrevolutions,notonlyinpost-colonialSoutheastAsia,Algeria,andPortugueseAfrica,butalsoinformallyindependentstatessuchasCuba,Ethiopia,Iran,andNicaragua.Asnewsocialrevolutionshavecontinuedtooccur,scholarshavebeenchallengedtobroadentheirscopeofcomparative
