2、ratedinmorehomogenousmasscultures.Inacontextwherefolktraditionsarenotdeadandwheretheconventionsofsuchcinemaarelinkedtolocalandvernacularmeanings,theavoidanceofdirectempiricalworkontheradicallydifferentmeaningsthatIndianpopularcinemahasforitshighlydiverseaudiencehasturnedalargepr
3、oportionofrecentstudiesintoornate,scholasticexercisesmeantforaselect,academicin-group.ThediscoveryofIndianpopularcinemabytheacademeinrecentyearshasnotbeenanunmixedblessing.Mostwritingsonthesubjectarenotmerelyoverwrittenandornate,butvitiatedbyaheavy,rarefiedtheoreticalapparatus.I
4、usetheterm‘vitiated’ratherthan‘burdened’becausethesewritingsusuallyseektounderstandcinemainIndiausingframeworksortheoriesthathavebeendevelopedinmorehomogenous,masssocieties.ThesetheoriespresumethatthoughthecontentandnarrativestyleofIndiancinemamaychange,theinterpretivemodelcanaf
5、fordtoremainmoreorlessconstantoverdiversesetsofviewers.Fordifferencesininterpretationorcriticismofpopularfilms,reflectmostlyideologicaloraestheticpreferences.Thisisanabsurdpresuppositionandwritingsbasedonitaretakenseriouslymainlybecausetheirproducersandconsumersbelongtothesamecu
6、ltureandclass.Manyfilmtheoristsorsociologistsoffilmsmayfindtheformulationtooharsh,butitlookslessone-sidedifoneadmitsthatfilmtheoristshavepaidlittleattentiontothewaytheviewers,particularly,culturallyandlinguisticallydiverseviewersinterpretIndianfilmsoutsideurban,middle-classIndia
7、.ThegapbetweentheseviewersandfilmtheoristsinIndiaisnotthesameasinEuropeorNorthAmerica.Atleastoneresearcher,AnjaliMonteiro(1999),hasnotedthatintheGoanslumwheresheworked,TVviewerssawserialisedstoriesofdetectionaspolicedocumentaries,designedtowarntheordinarycitizensofthewaysofthecr
