2、measurementoforganiccarbonabove1mg/L.2.0SUMMARYOFMETHOD2.1Organiccarbonismeasuredusingacarbonaceousanalyzer.Thisinstrumentconvertstheorganiccarboninasampletocarbondioxide(CO2)byeithercatalyticcombustionorwetchemicaloxidation.TheCO2formedistheneithermea
3、sureddirectlybyaninfrareddetectororconvertedtomethane(CH4)andmeasuredbyaflameionizationdetector.TheamountofCO2orCH4inasampleisdirectlyproportionaltotheconcentrationofcarbonaceousmaterialinthesample.2.2Carbonaceousanalyzersarecapableofmeasuringallformso
4、fcarboninasample.However,becauseofvariouspropertiesofcarbon-containingcompoundsinliquidsamples,themannerofpreliminarysampletreatmentaswellastheinstrumentsettingswilldeterminewhichformsofcarbonareactuallymeasured.Theformsofcarbonthatcanbemeasuredbythism
5、ethodare:1.Soluble,nonvolatileorganiccarbon:e.g.,naturalsugars.2.Soluble,volatileorganiccarbon:e.g.,mercaptans,alkanes,lowmolecularweightalcohols.3.Insoluble,partiallyvolatilecarbon:e.g.,lowmolecularweightoils.4.Insoluble,particulatecarbonaceousmateria
6、ls:e.g.,cellulosefibers.5.Solubleorinsolublecarbonaceousmaterialsadsorbedorentrappedoninsolubleinorganicsuspendedmatter:e.g.,oilymatteradsorbedonsiltparticles.2.3Carbonateandbicarbonateareinorganicformsofcarbonandmustbeseparatedfromthetotalorganiccarbo
7、nvalue.Dependingontheinstrumentmanufacturer'sinstructions,thisseparationcanbeaccomplishedbyeitherasimplemathematicalsubtraction,orbyremovingthecarbonateandbicarbonatebyconvertingthemtoCO2withdegassingpriortoanalysis.3.0INTERFERENCES3.1Carbonateandbicar
