1、METHOD9096LIQUIDRELEASETEST(LRT)PROCEDURE1.0SCOPEANDAPPLICATION1.1TheLiquidReleaseTest(LRT)isalaboratorytestdesignedtodeterminewhetherornotliquidswillbereleasedfromsorbentswhentheyaresubjectedtooverburdenpressuresinalandfill.1.2Anyliquid-loadedsorbentt
2、hatfailstheEPAPaintFilterFreeLiquidsTest(PFT)(SW-846Method9095),maybeassumedtoreleaseliquidsinthistest.AnalystsshouldensurethatthematerialinquestionwillpassthePFTbeforeperformingtheLRT.2.0SUMMARYOFMETHOD2.1Arepresentativesampleoftheliquid-loadedsorbent
3、,standing10cmhighinthedevice,isplacedbetweentwinstainlesssteelscreensandtwostainless-steelgrids,inadevicecapableofsimulatinglandfilloverburdenpressures.Anabsorptivefilterpaperisplacedonthesideofeachstainless-steelgridoppositethesample(i.e.,thestainless
4、-steelscreenseparatesthesampleandthefilterpaper,whilethestainless-steelgridprovidesasmallairgaptopreventwickingofliquidfromthesampleontothefilterpaper).Acompressiveforceof50psiisappliedtothetopofthesample.Releaseofliquidisindicatedwhenavisiblewetspotis
5、observedoneitherfilterpaper.3.0INTERFERENCES3.1Whentestingsorbentsareloadedwithvolatileliquids(e.g.,solvents),anyreleasedliquidmigratingtothefilterpapermayrapidlyevaporate.Forthisreason,filterpapersshouldbeexaminedimmediatelyafterthetesthasbeenconducte
6、d.3.2Itisnecessarytothoroughlycleananddrythestainless-steelscreenspriortotestingtopreventfalsepositiveorfalsenegativeresults.Materialcaughtinscreenholesmayimpedeliquidtransmissionthroughthescreencausingfalsenegativeresults.Astiffbristledbrush,likethose
7、usedtocleantestingsieves,maybeusedtodislodgematerialfromholesinthescreens.Thescreensshouldbeultrasonicallycleanedwithalaboratorydetergent,rinsedwithdeionizedwater,rinsedwithacetone,andthoroughlydried.Whensorbentscontainingoilysubstancesaretested,itmayb
8、enecessarytousesolvents(e.g.,methanolormethylenechloride)toremoveanyoilyresiduefromthescreensandfromthesampleholdersurfaces.3.3Whenplacingthe76mmscreenontopoftheloadedsampleitisimportanttoensurethatnosorbentispresentontopofthescreentoco
