4、September1996FOREWORDThesafetyoffuturegenerationsofnuclearpowerplantsisanimportantissuefornuclearplantsuppliers,electricutilities,governmentauthorities,andthepublicingeneral.Generalexpectationsareforunprovedsafetyinfutureplants,eventhoughmostcurrentplantsareconsideredtoh
5、aveachievedadequatelevelsofsafety.Whatsafetygoalsshouldbeachievedinfutureplants,andwhatdesignapproachesarepreferredinreachingthesegoalsaremattersofintensediscussionamongnuclearexperts.Sincethe1991ConferenceontheSafetyofNuclearPower:StrategyfortheFuture,theIAEAhasactively
6、supportedeffortsofMemberStatestoanswerthesequestions,throughvariousmeetingsandreports.TheTechnicalCommitteeMeetingonApproachestoSafetyofFutureNuclearPowerPlantsinDifferentCountries,heldfrom29Mayto2June1995,contributedtothisprocess.Expertsfrom14differentcountriesandtwoint
