2、family500yearsago.”ThisadageisknowntoallinChinaandiscertainlytrueasappliedtothefactthatpeopleoftheChenfamiliesinthe72countiesofGuangdongProvincejointlybuiltthistemple,in1894inthepresent-dayZhongshanQiRoad,asaplaceoftheirclannishactivitiesonspecialoccasionsaswellasashrinef
3、orofferingsacrificestotheircommonancestors.OtherwisecalledChenClanAcademy,itwasalsoaschoolforchildrenoftheChenfamilies.In1959,itwasconvertedintotheGuangdongFolkArtMuseum,forthetemplestructureitselfisacomprehensiveexpressionoftheexquisiteGuangdongfolkartsandcrafts.Covering
4、agroundspaceof15,000squaremeters,withafloorspaceof6,400squaremeters,thetempleisbuiltinthetraditionalChinesearchitecturalstyle.Itislaidoutinasymmetricalway,withthelongitudinalcentrallineastheaxisandthestructuresononesidecorrespondingexactlywiththoseontheother.Itswide-openm
5、ainhallsandthelattice-walledwing-roomsareinterspacedbycourtyardsandconnectedwithcorridors,andhugesuspendedorfloorscreensaswellassolidbrickwallsareusedaspartitionsbetweenhallsandcourtyardsandbetweenrooms;thuscreatinganartisticeffectofbeingstructurallycompactbutappearingspa
6、ciousandmagnificent,andproducingacontrastingeffectofthebigwiththesmall,thehighwiththelow,theopenwiththehiddenandthetruewiththefalse.Anotherfeatureofthetemplestructureisthatallthehousesaregable-roofed,withtwoslopestodrainawaytherainwater,whichisthetraditionalstyleofroofstr
