4、onclusionthatwhatweneedineducationisamuchbetterunderstandinginstudentsandlearningfromamotivationalperspectiveperspective,fromapsychologicalperspective.Ineducation,theonethingweknowhowtomeasurebestisIQ.Butwhatifdoingwellinschoolandinlifedependonmuchmor
5、ethatyourabilitytolearnquicklyandeasily.SoIlefttheclassroomandwenttoagraduateschooltobecomeapsychologist.Istartedstudyingkidsandadultsinallkindsofsuperchallengingsettings.Andineverystudymyquestionwaswho’ssuccessfulhereandwhy.MyresearchteamandIwenttoWe
6、stPointmilitarycatemyacademy.Wetrytopredictwhichcadetswouldstayinthemilitarytraining,whichwoulddropout.Wewenttothenationalspellingbee,wetriedtopredictwhichchildrenwouldadvancefarthisinthecompetition.Westudiedrockyrookieteachersworkinginreallytoughneig
7、hborhoods,askingwhichteacherarestillgoingtobethereinteachingbytheendoftheschoolyear,andofthose,whowouldbethemosteffectiveatimprovinglearningoutcomesfortheirstudents.Wepartneredwithprivatecompanies,askingwhichofthesesalespeoplearegoingtokeeptheirjobsan
8、dwho’sgoingtoearnthemostmoney.Inallthoseverydifferentcontexts,onecharacteristicemergedasasignificantpredictorofsuccess,anditwasn’tsocialintelligence,itwasn’tgoodlooks,physicalhealthanditwasn’tIQ.Itwasgrit.Gritispassionandforperseveranceverylon
