1、REVIEWOFTHEMONTHTheInternet’sUnholyMarriagetoCapitalismJOHNBEllaMyFOsTERandROBERTW.McCHEsNEyTheUnitedStatesandtheworldarenowagoodtwodecadesintotheInternetrevolution,orwhatwasoncecalledtheinformationage.Thepastgenerationhasseenablizzardofmind-bogglingdevelopmentsincommunication,rangin
2、gfromtheWorldWideWebandbroadband,toubiquitouscellphonesthatarequicklybecominghigh-poweredwirelesscomputersintheirownright.FirmssuchasGoogle,Amazon,Craigslist,andFacebookhavebecomeiconic.Immersioninthedigitalworldisnoworsoontobearequirementforsuccessfulparticipationinsociety.Thesubjec
3、tfordebateisnolongerwhethertheInternetcanberegardedasatechnologicaldevelopmentinthesameclassastelevisionorthetelephone.Increasingly,thedebateisturningtowhetherthisisacommunicationrevolutionclosertotheadventoftheprintingpress.1ThefullimpactoftheInternetrevolutionwillonlybecomeapparent
4、inthefuture,asmoretechnologicalchangeisonthehorizonthatcanbarelybeimaginedandhardlyanticipated.2Butenoughtimehastranspired,andinstitutionsandpracticeshavebeendeveloped,thatanassessmentofthedigitaleraispossible,aswellasasenseofitslikelytrajectoryintothefuture.Ouranalysisinthisarticlew
5、illfocusontheUnitedStates—notonlybecauseitisthesocietythatweknowbest,andtheInternet’spointoforigin,butalsobecauseitisthere,webelieve,thatonemostclearlyfindstheintegrationofmonopoly-financecapitalandtheInternet,representingthedominanttendencyoftheglobalcapitalistsystem.Thisisnotmeantt
