2、y.Inmyarticle,“TheImperialistWorldSystem:PaulBaran’sPoliticalEconomyofGrowthAfterFiftyYears”(MonthlyReview,May2007),IbeganbypointingoutthatBaran’sbookwasanoutgrowthofclassicalMarxistthought—theideasofMarx,Lenin,andLuxemburg.Atthesametimeitrepresentedas
3、harpdeparturefromtherigidorthodoxyoflineardevelopmentthathadcometocharacterizesomuchofso-cialist(aswellasbourgeois)thought—oftenpresentedintermsofHorace’sphrase,quotedbyMarx,“thetaleistoldofyou.”Baran’streatmentoftheimperialistworldsystemwasastartlingc
4、ontributionatthetimethathisbookappeared,challengingtheconventionalas-sumptionsofboththerightandanincreasinglycalcifiedleft.Yet,asRUPEsoclearlydemonstrates,Baran’sargumentcanbeseenashavingevolvedoutofearliercritiquesofimperialismflowingoutoftheRussianRe
5、volution,theComintern,andtheChineseRevolution.LeninandcertainvoicesintheCominterninthe1920sarticulatedmanyofthesamethesesthatBaranandthosewithinthebroadcur-rentofdependencytheoryweretopropoundinthe1950sand’60s.1Buttheseearlycontributionsoccurredinrelat
6、iontowhatStavrianosinGlobalRiftwastocall“TheFirstGlobalRevolutionaryWave”intheopeningdecadesofthetwentiethcenturyandpriorto“TheSecondGlobalRevolutionaryWave”unleashedbytheSecondWorldWar.2DevelopinghisideasintheageoftheColdWar,neocolonialism,andthenewly
