2、heabsoluteenergypositionsofconductionandvalencebandedgeswerecompiledforabout50eachsemiconductingmetaloxideandmetalsulfideminerals.Therelationshipsbetweenenergylevelsatmineralsemiconductor-electrolyteinterfacesandtheactivitiesofthesemineralsasacata-lystorphotocataly

3、stinaqueousredoxreactionsarereviewed.Thecompilationofbandedgeener-giesisbasedonexperimentalflatbandpotentialdataandcomplementaryempiricalcalculationsfromelectronegativitiesofconstituentelements.Whereasmostmetaloxidesemiconductorshavevalencebandedges1to3eVbelowtheH2

4、Ooxidationpotential(relativetoabsolutevacuumscale),energiesforconductionbandedgesarecloseto,orlowerthan,theH2Oreductionpotential.Theseoxidemineralsarestrongphoto-oxidationcatalystsinaqueoussolutions,butarelimitedintheirreducingpower.Non-transitionmetalsulfidesgener

5、allyhavehigherconductionandvalencebandedgeenergiesthanmetaloxides;therefore,valencebandholesinnon-transitionmetalsulfidesarelessoxidizing,butconductionbandelectronsareexceedinglyreducing.Mosttransition-metalsul-fides,however,arecharacterizedbysmallbandgaps(<1eV)and

6、bandedgessituatedwithinorclosetotheH2Ostabilitypotentials.Hence,boththeoxidizingpowerofthevalencebandholesandthereducingpoweroftheconductionbandelectronsarelowerthanthoseofnon-transitionmetalsulfides.INTRODUCTIONtionarisesofwhethersemiconductingmineralscouldpromote
