2、evisedform8October2007;accepted11December2007AbstractIneconomics,mostcoauthoredpapershaveallcoauthorsinalphabeticalorder.Itissometimesarguedthatthisconveysadvantagestopeoplewhosenamesstartwithlettersthatcomeearlyinthealphabet.Thispaperexamineswhether
3、thealphabeticalrankingofnamesaffectssomeonesreputation.Overall,wefindthatfacultymemberswithearlierlastnameinitialsaremorelikelytogetemploymentathighstandardresearchdepartments.Furthermore,weshowthattherelationshipbetweenalphabeticalplacementandacademi
4、csuccessremainssignificantifweuseasanalternativemeasureofreputationthenumberofpeopleshowinganinterestinthepapersofaparticularacademic.Thispaperalsoinvestigateswhetherthereportedalphabeticaleffectcreatesdifferentialincentivesforcoauthoring.Itisfoundtha
