2、asacombinatorialsemanticoperationrequiringcomputationoverandabovethatpro-videdbycombininglexicalitemsthroughexpectedsyntacticprocesses.Anexperimentisdescribedassessingwhetherornotparsingofastringrequiringcoercion—inadditiontosyntacticcomposi-tion—ismorecomputationallycos
3、tlythanparsingasyntacticallytransparentcounterpart,astringthatprovidesforaninterpretablerepresentationviasyntacticcompositionalone.Thepredictionofahighercomputationalcostforthisprocessisborneoutbytheresults.Inthispaperwereportuponthereal-timeprocessingconsequencesofaspe-
4、cificoperationthatinvolveslexicosemanticrepresentations,i.e.,representa-tionsthatprovidealltheinternalizedinformationconcerningwordmeaningsandwhoseunitsareevents,propositions,times,andquantities.Suchrepre-sentationsaretobecontrastedwithsyntacticrepresentationsoverwhichwo
5、rdorder,subject-verbagreementmarking,andcasemarkingaredeter-mined,andwhoseunitsarenouns,verbs,adjectives,prepositions,andthelike.Ourapproachexplicitlyrecognizestherequirementthatthesetwokindsofinformation(syntacticandlexicosemantic)bebroughtintocorrespon-dencetocreatethe
6、interpretationofthesentence.Theoperationwefocusuponisonethatmediatesthiscorrespondence.Thisoperationwefocusuponatthisinterface(oneofalargesetdis-cussedinthelexicosemanticsliterature)iscalledaspectualcoercion(MoensandSteedman,1987;Pustejovsky,1991a,1995;Jackendoff,1997)As
