4、hinmolecularmicrobialecologyprovidescompellingevi-dencefortheexistenceofmanynoveltypesofmicroorganismsintheenvironmentinnumbersandvarietiesthatdwarfthoseofthecomparativelyfewmicroorganismsstu-diedtodate.TheseresultswereobtainedbyestimationofDNAcomplexi
5、tyanddis-coveryofmanyunique16SrRNAgenesequencesfromvariousenvironmentalsources[5,6].Thus,theentiretyofthemicrobialgenomesfoundinnature,termedthemetagenomebysomeauthors[7],harborsvastlymoregeneticinformationthaniscontainedinthestudiedandculturedsubset.C
6、orrespondingly,thepotentialofmicro-organismsandtheirenzymesinthesynthesisofnewcompoundsisbynomeansexhausted.Theassessmentandexploitationofthisenormousmicrobialdiversityof-fersanalmostunlimitedpoolofnewgenes,geneproducts,andbiosyntheticpathwaysforbiotec
7、hnologyandotherpurposes.Theclassicalandcumbersomeapproachtoisolatenewenzymesfromenvironmen-talsamplesisenrichmentandscreeningofawidevarietyofmicroorganismsforthedesiredactivity.Theenzymesandthecorrespondinggenesarethenrecoveredfromtheidentifiedorganism
