3、1994).Basedontheseinsights,andlargelyinspiredbytheGBanalysisofHaider(1993),wedevelopanalternativeanalysisofV2inHPSG,whichisbasedontheconceptofunderspeci cation.The niteverbisrepresentedinthelexiconasanabstractcategorytypewhichisunderspeci edforfunctionalandcomplementationproperties.Inconjunc
4、tionwiththetypehierarchy,thesepropertiesgetappropriatelyde neddependingontheactualsyntacticcontexttheverbappearsin.WeendupwithananalysisoftheV2dependencyrelationwhichrestrictstheinformationstructuresharedbyantecedentandtraceto(enriched)HEADattributes,asopposedtoLOCALattributesforphrasalconst
5、ituents.ThisaccountsforthelocalityoftheV2dependency.Theanalysisbyunderspeci cationmakesinterestingpredictionsfortheinterdependenceofsyntacticandsemanticproperties.ThisismosttransparentfortheungrammaticalityofV2inembeddedwh-clauses.IntroductionAcentralconcernintheareaofcomputationalsyntaxisto
6、exploitinsightsgainedinsyntactictheory.AnenormousamountofvaluableworkonsyntaxhasbeendoneintheGBframework,ande ortsaremadetocomeupwithformalizationsandparsingsystemsthatdirectlytransferGBanalysestoworkingcomputationalsystems(forarecentoverviewsee[Sta]).Withoutgoingintoadiscussionaboutthisline
