5、tionshiptheSouthernOscillation.Sincethe1800s,Peruvianfishermannoticedthattheirharvestcompletelyfailedeveryfewyears.ThisperiodiceventwasassociatedwithunusuallywarmwatersoffthecoastofPeru.Thesewarmwatersresultedfromashutdownoftheupwellingcirculationnorm

6、allyfoundalongtheequator.Sinceupwellingsuppliesnutrientstothesurfacewaters,thisresultedinmassstarvationofplantandanimallifeintheeasternequatorialPacific.SincetheperiodicwarmingalmostalwaysoccurredaroundDecember,thefishermannameditElNiño,inreferencetot

7、heChristchild.In1969,UCLAprofessorJacobBjerkneswasthefirsttorecognizethatElNiñoandtheSouthernOscillationareactuallymanifestationsofthesamephysicalphenomenonandthatitresultsfromanunstableinteractionbetweentheatmosphereandtheocean.ThisresultedinthetermE
