2、twords(实字shı´-zı`)andfunctionwords(虚字xu#-zı`),yetsupplementsthetraditionalviewwiththeprocessesthatacontentwordmayundergowhenbecomingafunctionword,andthusleadsustowardabetterunderstand-ingofthehistoryofthelanguage.Nevertheless,waystoapplymethodsofgrammaticalizationtotherebuildingofhistoricalC
3、hinesegrammarstillneedtobescrutinized.Asanoverviewofrecentworksreveals,studiesofthesamegrammaticalmarkercancometodrasticallydi¤erentconclusionsabouttheprocessesofitschange.Thisconfusingphenomenonhastodowiththepropertiesofthelanguage,itslackofmorphologyandthenatureofitswrittensys-tem.AncientC
