2、lymovingrathaveastheirprimarycorrelatetheanimal'slocationinanenvironment(placecells).Incontrast,thehippocampalelectroencephalographthetapatternofrhythmicalwaves(7-12Hz)isbettercorrelatedwithaclassofmovementsthatchangetherat'slocationinanenvironment.Duringmovementthroug
3、htheplacefield,thecomplexspikecellsoftenfireinaburstingpatternwithaninterburstfrequencyinthesamerangeastheconcurrentelectroencephalographtheta.Thepresentstudyexaminedthephaseofthethetawaveatwhichtheplacecellsfired.Itwasfoundthatfiringconsistentlybeganataparticularphase
4、astheratenteredthefieldbutthenshiftedinasystematicwayduringtraversalofthefield,movingprogressivelyforwardoneachthetacycle.Thisprecessionofthephaserangedfrom100"to3.55"indifferentcells.Theeffectappearedtobeduetothefactthatindividualcellshadahigherinterburstratethantheth
5、etafrequency.Thephasewashighlycorrelatedwithspatiallocationandlesswellcorrelatedwithtemporalaspectsofbehavior,suchasthetimeafterplacefieldentry.Theseresultshaveimplicationsforseveralaspectsofhippocampalfunction.First,byusingthephaserelationshipaswellasthefiringrate,pla
6、cecellscanimprovetheaccuracyofplacecoding.Second,thecharacteristicsofthephaseshiftconstrainthemodelsthatdefinetheconstructionofplacefields.Third,theresultsrestrictthetemporalandspatialcircumstancesunderwhichsynapsesinthehippocampuscouldbemodified.Keywords:placeunits,th
