3、,comparativestudyofmetadiscourseintheacademicMetadiscoursewritingoftwogroupsofundergraduatestudentsworkingintwodifferentdisciplines.TheChineselearnersgroupsofstudentswere:1)NativespeakersofMandarinstudyinginChinathroughtheAcademicwritingmediumofEnglish;2)NativespeakersofMandarinstudyingintheUK
4、throughtheCorpusbasedmediumofEnglish.Foreachgroupofstudents,weexaminedwritingundertakenintwoEAPundergraduatedisciplinarycourses:LiteraryCriticismandTranslationStudies.OuraimwastoextendresearchintoEnglishwritingbyL1Mandarinspeakers,andtoidentifypatternsofdifferenceandsimilaritybothbetweeneducat
5、ionalcontextsandbetweendisciplines.Resultssuggestthatpatternsofmetadiscourseuseinourcorpusareassociatedwithbothdisciplinaryandcontextualfactors,butthatcontextualfactorsmayhaveastrongereffectthandisciplinaryfactors.Forourdata,localinstitutionalcultureseemstohaveanoticeableinfluenceonstudentwrite
