2、tributionandtraceelementcompositionofoceanicsuspendedparticulatematter(SPM)arepresented.SPMwasextractedfromupto10001ofsurfaceseawaterbyacontinuousflowtechniqueat34transectsalongtheAtlanticOcean.Withanoverallaverageof27pg/l,concentrationsofSPMrangedfromlessthan1ug/l
3、inthesouthwesternAtlantictoamaximumof115pg/lintheopenoceanoffWestAfrica.ParticulateconcentrationsofAl,Cd,Cu,Fe,MnandPbanddistributionofparticulateorganiccarbon(POC)weredeterminedrevealingsignificantandsurprisingspatialandseasonalvariations:althoughsamplingwasperfor
4、medontwocruisesatdifferentlongitudesandseasons,particulateAl,Fe,MnandPbconcentrationswereverysimilar.Unlikethesefourelements,distinctseasonaldifferencesinparticulateCdconcentrationwerefoundandtracedbacktobiologicalactivity.ClearlydistinguishedpeakconcentrationsforA
5、l(7.1nM)andFe(2.5nM)werefoundintheIntertropicalConvergenceZone(ITCZ),whilemaximaforCd(7.6PM),Cu(24pM)andPb(1.1PM)werelocatedfurthernorthinthesubtropics.AsignificantcorrelationbetweenPOCandallsixmetalsisfurtherreported.SPMinvestigatedinthisstudywasfoundtoconsistmain
6、lyofphytoplankton.CorrespondingdissolvedAl,Cd,CuandPbconcentrationsinsurfaceseawaterarereported.Comparisonwiththeparticulatefractionshowsthatmorethan90%ofCd,CuandPbandmorethan80%ofAlarelocalizedinthedissolvedstate.1.IntroductionStummandBrauner,1975).Thedissolvedsta
