2、duatestudentsandtopractisingcivilengineerswhoareconcernedwithtestingsoilspecimensordesigningworksthatinvolvesoil.Ourpurposeistofocusattentiononthecriticalstateconceptanddemonstratewhatwebelievetobeitsimportanceinaproperunderstandingofthemechanicalbehaviourofsoils.Wehavetriedtoachievethisbymeans

3、ofvarioussimplemechanicalmodelsthatrepresent(withvaryingdegreesofaccuracy)thelaboratorybehaviourofremouldedsoils.Wehavenotwrittenastandardtextonsoilmechanics,and,asaconsequence,wehavepurposelynotconsideredpartlysaturated,structured,anisotropic,sensitive,orstabilizedsoil.Wehavenotdiscusseddynami

4、c,seismic,ordampingpropertiesofsoils;wehavedeliberatelyomittedsuchtopicsasthepredictionofsettlementbasedonBoussinesq’sfunctionsforelasticstressdistributionsastheyarenotdirectlyrelevanttoourpurpose.Thematerialpresentedinthisbookislargelydrawnfromthecoursesoflecturesandassociatedlaboratoryclasses

5、thatweofferedtoourfinalyearcivilengineeringundergraduatesandadvancedstudentsin1965/6and1966/7.TheircoursesalsoincludedmaterialcoveredbystandardtextbookssuchasSoilMechanicsinEngineeringPracticebyK.TerzaghiandR.B.Peck(Wiley1948),FundamentalsofSoilMechanicsbyD.W.Taylor(Wiley1948)orPrinciplesofSoil

6、MechanicsbyR.F.Scott(Addison-Wesley1963).Inordertocreateaproperbackgroundforthecriticalstateconceptwehavefeltitnecessarytoemphasizecertainaspectsofcontinuummechanicsrelatedtostressandstraininchapter2andtodevelopthewell-establishedtheoriesofseepageandone-dimensionalconsolidationinchapters3and4.W
