1、AgeandSecondLanguageAcquisitionandProcessing:ASelectiveOverviewDavidBirdsongUniversityofTexasatAustinThisarticleprovidesaselectiveoverviewoftheoreticalissuesandempiricalfindingsrelatingtothequestionofageandsecondlanguageacquisition(L2A).Bothbehav-ioralandbrain-baseddataarediscus
2、sedinthecontextsofneurocognitiveagingandcognitiveneurofunctioninthematureindividual.Movingbeyondtheclassicalnotionof“deficient”L2processingandacquisition,weconsiderthecomplementaryquestionoflearnerpotentialinpostado-lescentL2A.Theoutcomeofsecondlanguageacquisition(L2A)amongadult
3、sisdemonstrablydifferentinmanyrespectsfromtheout-comeoffirstlanguageacquisition(L1A)amongchildren.Depart-ingfromthisbasicobservation,researchersattempttounder-standthevarioussourcesofage-relatedeffectsinL2A.Thepresentarticleisanoverviewoffactsandtheoreticalissuesconcerningageand
4、L2A.Thiscontributionconsidersbothbehavioraldataandbrain-basedprocessingdata.Thereviewin-cludesfindingsandcontroversiesintheareasofneurocognitivedevelopmentandaging,andcognitiveneurofunctioninthema-turebrain.Acomprehensivetreatmentofthefactsandissuesisnotpossibleinthespaceavailab
