2、onwithahighmalignantpotentialisconsideredpreneoplastic.Lobuloalveolarlesionshavebeenidenti-fiedinthehumanmammaryglandwhichfitmostofthecriteriaforpre-neoplasia.Thelesions,hyperplasticatypicallobules,aremulticentric,haveahighstatisticalassociationwithbreastcanceran
3、ddemonstrateamorphologicalprogressionthroughdysplasiatofrankcarcinoma.Otherbreastlesionshaveahighstatisticalassociationbutnomorphologicalprogressioncanbeseenandtheirneoplasticpotentialremainsunknown.Thesignificanceofthesecorrela-tionsisenhancedbytheoccurrenceofho
4、mologousbreastlesionsinoutbredandinbredanimalmodels.Statisticalcorrelationwithbreastcancerandaber-rantmorphologyhasbeenacceptedaspresumptiveevidenceofpreneoplasiainsomeanimals.Definitiveproofoftheneoplasticpotentialhasbeenobtainedinrodentmodelsbytransplantationof
5、thesuspectedlesionsandtheirsubsequentdevelopmentintocancers.Althoughastrongmorphologicalandstatisticalanalogyexistsbetweenthehumanandanimalmodels,thecausesandbiologicalpotentialofthehumanlesionsawaitexperimentalproof.Cancer39:2734-2746,1977.PRENEOPLASIAMAYBEDEFIN
