4、opedandsuccessfullyusedtomanagethepipelinenetworksinselectedareasofBeijing.Amethodbasedonthegeographicinformationsystemhasbeenproposedtoquicklyandautomaticallyoptimizethelayoutoftheinstrumentswhichdetectleaks.Methodsarealsoproposedtoestimatetheprobability

5、ofeachpipesegmentleaking(onthebasisofhistoricleakagedata),andtoassistinlocatingtheleakagepoints(basedonleakagesignals).Thedistrictmeteringarea(DMA)strategyisused.GuidelinesandaflowchartforestablishingaDMAtomanagethelarge-scaleloopednetworksinBeijingareprop

6、osed.Thesedifferentfunctionshavebeenimplementedintoacentralsoftwaresystemtosimplifytheday-to-dayuseofthesystem.In2007thesystemdetected102non-obviousleakages(i.e.,14.2%ofthetotaldetectedinBeijing)intheselectedareas,whichwasestimatedtosaveatotalvolumeof2,385
