2、etyfactor(SF)equationforanyspecifiedrockslopefailuremode(suchasplaneshear,steppath,orwedge)toobtainreliableestimatesofthemeanandstandarddeviationoftheSFprobabilitydistribution.Agammaprobabilitydensityfunctionisrecommendedformodelingthisprobabilitydistribution,becauseitallowsonl
3、yforpositivevaluesandisflexibleenoughtoprovidesymmetricalshapesandright-skewed,exponential-typeshapesfortheSFdistribution.Themeanandstandarddeviationdefinethisdistribution,whichthencanbeintegratednumericallyfrom0to1toobtaintheprobabilityofsliding,PS(portionoftheSFdistributionwh
4、ereSF<1.0).Theoverallprobabilityoffailure,PF,forthepotentialslopefailuremassisthejointprobabilitythattherockdiscontinuitiesarelongenoughtoallowkinematicfailure(PL)andthatslidingoccursalongtherockdiscontinuities(PS);thatis,PF=PSPL.Thismethodforestimatingtheprobabilityofslidingis
5、extremelyefficientcomputationally,andthus,expeditesslopestabilitysimulationroutinesusedbyNIOSHsoftwaretostochasticallydescriberockslopebehaviorandassisttheengineerindesigningcatchbenchesforlargerockslopes.Enhancedbenchdesigntranslatesintoincreasedoperationalefficiencyandsaferwo
