2、tionsandepistemicmodalsamongthem.MarkRichard(2004)alsodefendsaversionofrelativism,whichheappliestovagueness-inducingfeaturesofthesemanticsofgradableadjectives;Richardthinksthatitprovidesamodeltoproperlyarticulatecontextualistintuitionsaboutknowledgeattributions.OnMacFarlanes
3、characterization,andonRichardsasIwillbeinterpretingit,truth-relativistclaimspositadistinctivekindofcontext-dependence,tobedistinguishedfromthemorefamiliaronethathasbeencloselystudiedsinceKaplans(1989)workinthe1970s.Radicaltruth-relativistspositthedependenceoftheevaluationofa
4、nassertionastrueorotherwiseonaspectsofthecontextoftheevaluationitselfincontrastwiththecontextoftheassertion.Themainmotivationfortruth-relativismistomakesenseofallegedcasesoffaultlessdisagreement.Thesearecasesofsubstantivedisagreement(Richard,op.cit.,219)betweentwothinkers,in
5、thesensethatoneassertssomethingthatisinconsistentwithwhattheotherasserts(ibid.:218),while,nonetheless,neitherofthemisatfault,withrespecttothefundamentalnormstoevaluateactsofassertionsuchasthosetheyareengagedin,andinsomeunexpectedway:itcannotjustbethattheyaretalkingaboutdiffe
