2、Thispaperaddressestheoreticalproblemsarisingfromthevaguenessoflanguageterms,andintu-itionsofthevaguenessoftheconceptstowhichtheyrefer.Itisarguedthatthecentralintuitionsofprototypetheoryaresufficienttoaccountforbothtypicalityphenomenaandpsychologicalintuitionsaboutdegreesofm

3、embershipinvaguelydefinedclasses.Thefirstsectionexplainstheimportanceoftherelationbetweendegreesofmembershipandtypicality(orgoodnessofexample)inconceptualcat-egorization.ThesecondandthirdsectionaddressargumentsadvancedbyOshersonandSmith(1997),andKampandPartee(1995),thatthetw

4、onotionsofdegreeofmembershipandtypicalitymustrelatetofundamentallydifferentaspectsofconceptualrepresentations.AversionofprototypetheorytheThresholdModelisproposedtocountertheseargumentsandthreepossiblesolutionstotheproblemsoflogicalselfcontradictionandtautologyforvaguecate
