2、onalinitiativededicatedtothedevelopmentofnovelimagingdetectorsforUVsolarobservations.Itreliesonthepropertiesofwide-bandgapsemiconductormaterials(inparticulardiamondandAl-Ga-nitrides).ThisinvestigationisproposedinviewoftheSolarOrbiterUVinstruments,forwhichtheexpecte

3、dbenefitsofthenewsensors,visibleblindnessandradiationhardness,willbehighlyvaluable.Despitevariousadvancesinthetechnologyofimagingdetectorsoverthelastfewdecades,thepresentUVimagersbasedonsiliconCCDsormicrochan-nelplatesexhibitlimitationswhichareinherenttotheiractualm

4、aterialandtechnology.Yettheutmostspatialresolution,fasttemporalcadence,sensitivity,andphotometricac-curacywillallbedecisiveforforthcomingsolarspacemissions.Theadventofimagersmadeoflargewide-bandgapsemiconductorswouldsurmountmanypresentweaknesses.Thiswouldopenupnews

5、cientificprospectsand,bysimplifyingtheirdesign,wouldevenmaketheinstrumentscheaper.AsfortheSolarOrbiter,theaspirationforwide-bandgapsemiconductor-basedUVdetectorsisstillmoredesirablebecausethespacecraftwillap-proachtheSunwhereheatandradiationfluxesarehigh.Wedescribeth

6、emotivationslead-ingtosuchnewdevelopments,andpresentaprogrammetoachieverevolutionaryflightcameraswithintheSolarOrbiterschedule.29.1MotivationsCurrentsolaratmosphericstudiesshowthattheneedforimprovedUVobservationsisparamount.Practically,theobservationaldatacanbeobtai

7、nedbyemphasizingapparentlyindepen-dentattributes:temporal,spectral,spatialresolutions,signal-to-noiseratio,fieldofview,etc.Scientificinvestigationsbenefitfromalloftheseaspects.However,theyarecoupledbythephysicalprocessestobeobserved.Forexample,smallerphenomenausuallyh
