3、ians,orengineers.IthadtodowithbeingChinese.ButmysistersandIrejectedthatfuture,andtheyearIcamehomewithHonorsinEnglish,HistoryandDebatewasayearofdisillusionformyparents.Itwasnotthattheyweren’tproudofmyaccomplishments,butmerelythattheyhadcertainideasofwhatwassafeandsolid,whatw
4、edidinlife.Physics,math,turninginhomework,andcrossingthestreetwhenHareKrishnaswereonourside—thosethingsweresafe.ButtheHumanitiesweleftforPureAmericans. Unfortunatelyformyparents,however,thesecurityofthatworldissimplynotenoughforme,andIhavescaredthemmorethanoncewithwhatthey
5、callmy“wild”treksintounfamiliarareas.IspentoneafternooninterviewingtheHareKrishnasforourschoolnewspaper—andtheynearlycalledthepolice.Then,tomakethingsworse,IdecidedtoentertheCrystalSpringsDramacontest.Formyparents,actingwassomethingChinesegirlsdidnotdo.Itsmackedofthebohemia
6、n,andwasbutashortsteptodrugs,debauchery,andallthedark,illicitfacetsoflife.Theyneverdidapproveoftheexperience—evendespitemysecondplaceatCrystalSpringsandmyassurancesthatactingwas,afterall,nomorethanawhim. WhatIwasdoingwhenwasmovingawayfromthesecuritymyparentsprescribed.Iwas
