7、nawaysimilartothatincovalentbonding.Whenathirdsodiumatomisbroughtintocloseproximitywiththefirsttwo,thevalenceelectronscanalsointeractandcontinuetoformabond.Solidsodiumhasabody-centeredcubicstructure,soeachatomhaseightnearestneighborswitheachatomsharingmanyvalenceelectrons.Wecanthinkofthepos
8、itivemetallicionsasbeingsurroundedbyaseaofnegativeelectrons,thesolidbeingheldtogetherbytheelectrostaticforces.Thisdescriptiongivesqualitativepictureofthemetallicbond.MetallicbondingAfourthtypeofatomicbond,calledtheVanderWaalsbond,istheweakestofthechemicalbonds.Ahydrogenfluoride(HF)molecule,
9、forexample,isformedbyanionicbond.Theeffectivecenterofthepositivechargeofthemoleculeisnotthesameastheeffectivecenterofthenegativecharge.ThisnonsymmetryinthechargedistributionresultsinasmallelectricdipolethatcaninteractwiththedipolesofotherHFmolecules.With
