3、facing. WeseeitbackintheUnitedStates. WeseeithereinLondon. Weseeitaroundtheworld: familieslosingtheirhomes,workerslosingtheirjobsandtheirsavings,studentswhoaredeferringtheirdreams. Somanyhavelostsomuch. Justtounderscorethispoint,backintheUnitedStates,joblessclaimsrelea
4、sedtodaywerethehighestin26years. Weoweittoallofourcitizenstoact,andtoactwithasenseofurgency.Inanagewhereoureconomiesarelinkedmorecloselythaneverbefore,thewholeworldhasbeentouchedbythisdevastatingdownturn. Andtoday,theworld'sleadershaverespondedwithanunprecedentedsetofcompr
5、ehensiveandcoordinatedactions.Now,justkeepinmindsomehistoricalcontext. Facedwithsimilarglobalchallengesinthepast,theworldwasslowtoact,andpeoplepaidanenormousprice. ThatwastrueintheGreatDepression,whennationsprolongedandworsenedthecrisisbyturninginward,waitingformorethanade
6、cadetomeetthechallengetogether. Evenasrecentlyasthe1980s,theslowglobalresponsedeepenedandwidenedadebtcrisisinLatinAmericathatpushedmillionsintopoverty.Today,we'velearnedthelessonsofhistory. Iknowthatinthedaysleadinguptothesummit,someofyouinthepress,somecommentators,confuse
