2、doing. Wehavebroughthomemorethan90,000troopssinceItookoffice. WehaveclosedorturnedovertoIraqhundredsofbases. Inmanypartsofthecountry,Iraqishavealreadytakentheleadforsecurity.Inthemonthsahead,ourtroopswillcontinuetosupportandtrainIraqiforces,partnerwithIraqisincounterterrorismmissions,andpro
3、tectourcivilianandmilitaryefforts. Butthebottomlineisthis:thewarisending. Likeanysovereign,independentnation,Iraqisfreetochartitsowncourse. Andbytheendofnextyear,allofourtroopswillbehome.AswemarktheendofAmerica’scombatmissioninIraq,agratefulnationmustpaytributetoallwhohaveservedthere. Becau
4、separtofresponsiblyendingthiswarismeetingourresponsibilitytothosewhohavefoughtit.ThewarsinIraqandAfghanistannowmakeupAmerica’slongestcontinuouscombatengagement. Forthebetterpartofadecade,ourtroopsandtheirfamilieshaveservedtouraftertourwithhonorandheroism,riskingandoftengivingtheirlivesforth
5、edefenseofourfreedomandsecurity. MorethanonemillionAmericansinuniformhaveservedinIraq–farmorethananyconflictsinceVietnam. AndmorethanonemillionwhohaveservedinbothwarshavenowfinishedtheirserviceandjoinedtheproudranksofAmerica’sveterans.Whatthisnewgenerationofveteransmustknowisthis:ournation’
6、scommitmenttoallwhowearitsuniformisasacredtrustthatisasoldasourrepublicitself. Itisonethat,asPresident,Iconsideramoralobligationtouphold.Atthesametime,thesearenewwars;withnewmissions,newmethods,andnewperils. Andwhattoday’sveteranshaveearned–whattheyhaveeveryrighttoexpect–isnewcare,newopport
